Vouraikou Gorge

An enchanting, natural landscape, full of plane forests, crystal clear, rushing waters and hidden rocks. In this special gorge, many species of flora and fauna live and grow, creating a special habitat of outstanding natural beauty, which has been included in the Natura 2000 network.

The river Vouraikos is named after the ancient city of Voura, which participated in the foundation of the Achaean Confederation. According to another version, a beautiful girl named Voura was the beloved of the mythical Hercules, who in his attempt to reach her opened this gorge.

The river has a length of 40 km, it originates from Chelmos at an altitude of 1000 m, passes through the Kalavrita plateau, crosses the 20 km long gorge alongside the Odontotos and flows into the Corinthian Gulf.

Here one can enjoy the enchanting route by train, which has been operating non-stop since 1896, giving generously idyllic images with different colours and aromas depending on the season. Finally, for lovers of hiking, the descent of the Vouraikos river is a unique experience, which lasts about 6 hours, crossing bridges, tunnels, waterfalls in the wild nature that fascinates you...
