Stygian waters

Following the European path E4, crossing the Chelmos, one reaches the base of the waterfall, from where the sacred waters of Stygos fall. The mythical waters are located at an altitude of 2,100m in the steep and rocky Neraidorahi. There, according to mythology, the Goddess Thea baptized Achilles and made him immortal, except for his heel, from which she held him and was the only vulnerable spot on him.

Styx was an Oceaness who had her palace in Tartarus and was guarded night and day by sleepless dragons. From there it was believed that the waters of the spring gushed forth and it was believed that the water granted immortality. The gods swore there (it was the greatest oath a god could make) and it was there that the punished gods were punished... According to Pausanias, its waters were deadly to humans and animals, and were harmful to materials, except for gold and horses' hooves. The color of the waters is black, as they lick the rock as they fall. According to legend, the goddess Demeter, wanting to escape from Poseidon, transformed herself into a mare, but when she was reflected in the waters of Styx and saw her form she was frightened and cursed them to turn black.
