At a distance of 30 km from the town of Kalavrita, in a green, idyllic landscape, with abundant, crystal clear waters, is the chapel of Panagia Plataniotissa.
This small church was formed in the hollow of a huge, ancient plane tree which came from the union of three planes that grew together and over time created this remarkable masterpiece of nature. This historic plane tree is approximately 25 metres high, with a circumference of 16 metres at its base and 12,65 metres in the middle, and can accommodate around 20 pilgrims. There is a small temple, with two columns which form the Beautiful Gate. The icon of Panagia Vrefokratousa was 'imprinted' on the plane tree inside the cavern when, according to tradition, in the years of iconoclasm, the monks of the Great Cave, in order to save it, transported it from place to place and thus spent an evening in the village of Klapatsouna (as it was then called), inside the natural hollow of the plane tree. In the morning when they took the image to continue their journey they were surprised to see its imprint on the trunk of the tree, exactly where they had touched it. Thus she was named Panagia Plataniotissa and is celebrated on September 8.
