Saint Paul the New Martyr (Panagiotis Panoutsopoulos) was born in 1785, in the village of Aronia (Sopoto) of the Municipality of Kalavrita and met a tragic death on May 22, 1818, in Tripoli, when he wanted to defend the faith of his ancestors, he was beheaded and thus he is one of the two patrons.
He came from poor but virtuous parents. As a boy he went to Patras and learned the trade of a plank maker and then returned to his native place and opened a workshop where he worked for several years. Later he went to Mount Athos, to the I. M. Megisti Lavra and dedicated himself to the monastic life.
In Aronia, the couple John and Catherine Anagnostopoulou built a magnificent church dedicated to the memory of Saint Paul the New Martyr, which is surrounded by the Foundation for the Protection of Moral and Spiritual Values and the other annexes, a spiritual centre, a lending library, hostels for high priests and friends of the foundation. The picturesque church of Neomartyr in the village is decorated with hagiographies by Fotis Kontoglou.
His memory is commemorated on 22 May.
