Tower of Andreas Zaimis

The Tower of Andreas Zaimis is located in the village of Kerpini, in a dilapidated state. Andreas Zaimis (1791 - 4 May 1840) was a Greek fighter of 1821, son of the historical family of Zaimides (son of the prefect of Kalavrita, Asimaki Zaimis), who later served as Prime Minister of the newly established Greece.

Andreas Zaimis was born in 1791 in this small village of Kalavrita, Kerpini, located north of the city, at an altitude of 1070 meters. As a young man he was initiated into the Society of Friends (in 1819 by Andreas Londo) and actively participated in the preparation of the Struggle. He abandoned his studies in Italy and took part in the revolution, fighting in the siege of Patras and in Messolonghi. Together with Paleon Patron Germanos, he raised the banner of the Revolution at the Historic Monastery of Agia Lavra on 18 March 1821.

He participated with his own military corps in the repulsion of Dramalis and was a member of the First and Second National Assemblies, the Executive Body, but also served as president of the Administrative Committee of Greece, until the arrival of Kapodistrias, and later, after the assassination of the governor, until the arrival of Otto. He served as a proxy at the 1822 Epidaurus assembly. Andreas Zaimis completed his political career during Otto's reign, as vice-president of the Council of State and president of the Council of Ministers. He married Eleni Deligianni, daughter of the prefect of Lagadia, Ioannis Deligianni. His son Thrasybulos and grandson Alexander also served as Prime Ministers. He died in Athens in 1840 at the age of 49.
