Dafni

Dafni is a mountain village, at an altitude of 641m. at the border of the prefecture of Achaia - Arcadia (mountainous Gortynia). It is a village of the former district of Kalavrita and the present municipality of Kalavrita. It is built amphitheatrically on the southeastern side of the Aphrodisios mountain and more specifically on the slopes of Ag. Mamas and Korakofolia

It must have existed as a settlement since 900 AD, while it is mentioned in Frankish registers from the beginning of the 13th century. In the Chronicle of Morea it is mentioned under the name of Estransses and belonged to the Barony of Akova. It made an important contribution to the revolution of 1821 and was completely destroyed in the summer of 1826, during the Turkish occupation. From the mid-19th century, it was the economic and administrative centre of the wider region, (in 1940 with a population of 2360 inhabitants it was the third largest in the prefecture of Achaia, after Patras and Aigio, and according to the 2011 census only 436 permanent residents remained). Until 1928 the village was called STREZOVA, given by Slavic settlers (who came to the area in the 7th century) and meaning oak tree or oak forest. There are also other versions. The modern name, DAFNI, is due to the mythological daughter of the river Ladon, who was transformed into the homonymous plant. Daphne belongs to the homonymous local community of the municipal unit of Paion, of the Kallikratis municipality of Kalavrita, Achaia Region. From 1912 to 1946 it was a community of Daphne; from 1946 it was upgraded to the Municipality of Daphne; from 1997 it was designated as the seat of the Kapodistrian Municipality of Paios and finally in 2010 it was annexed to the Kallikratis Municipality of Kalavrita.

Today it is a popular destination for lovers of alternative tourism, since in a very short distance is the river Ladonas and the homonymous artificial lake, which are ideal for kayaking, rafting, rowing, fishing and other activities. Also various hiking trails such as the forest of Barbous, the Trikamaros bridge etc.

It is about 220 km from Athens, 44 km from Kalavrita, 110 km from Patras and 68 km from Tripoli.

Dafni is a picturesque and green village with many natural beauties and sights such as the early Christian monastery, churches and chapels, old schools of excellent architecture, fountains, cobbled streets, etc. It has hotels and guesthouses, supermarkets and mini markets, taverns and taverns, cafe-bars, playground, parking and recreation areas.
