Tourlada

Here you will find Tourlada…

Tourlada is a small mountain village perched at an altitude of 800m. It used to be a community of the Kalavrita Province, while today it is a municipal district of the Municipality of Lefkas. It is located 5km from the capital of the municipality, Klitoria. It is built on the northern side of the mountain Kourkoulitsa of the wider complex of the famous Helmos.

Tourlada is 220km from Athens via the Artemision tunnel. It is 120km from Patras, while the nearest major urban centre is Tripoli, 65km away. Road access to the village is easy and through a very good road network. Also, at a distance of 30 km are the historic Kalavrita.

Through time

The name of the village apparently came from the morphology of the mountain Kourkulitsa or the west of the village hill Tsouga, which resemble domes, so we have the name Troulada and, in a misnomer, Tourlada.

The genesis of the settlement is not fully ascertained. It was first mentioned in official texts after the Venetian census drawn up on 29/08/1699 and published in Venice in 1704, in particular in the chapter REGNO DEL PELOPONHSO-Terzo Terretorio di Calavri, i.e. Kingdom of the Peloponnese - Third Region of Kalavrita, with the Latin word TURLADA.

Our village has an important tradition of national struggles. In particular, in the locality of Froxilia, on 16 and 17 March 1821, two important armed revolutionary events took place against the Bohemian of Kalavrita, Arnaoutoglou and his entourage of fighters: Sotirios Papadaeus and his companions in the first case and himself and Ioannis Chondrogiannis and Asimakis Dolkas and their companions in the second, resulting in the killing of two Turks including Arnaoutoglou's cafeteria worker. Since then this area has been called ''Kaffetzis''. The contribution of the village was important in the subsequent national struggles as well.

The most important event occurred on 12 December 1943, the feast of St. Spyridon, the day before the Kalavrita Holocaust, when a group of German soldiers were searching for their compatriots arrested by ELAS guerrillas. The males of the village were rounded up for execution, which was avoided at the last moment thanks to the efforts of villagers who convinced the German commanders that the village had nothing to do with the German prisoners.
